At what point in the project should one start with simulation?
Ideally, simulation is already included in the concept phase of plant or factory planning and runs parallel to it. This means that as the knowledge in the planning grows, the simulation is also built up.
The challenge in this phase is, of course, that no layout exists yet, but in principle only conceptual studies are available. I can run through these in the simulation in such a way that a very realistic picture emerges from the point of view of the interplay of which resources I need: so, for example, how many machines and how many stacker cranes do I need to map a process properly?
As a rule, detailed planning then follows. That means a layout is created, a specific concept with the resources just determined is created. And now I can analyse the processes more precisely with the help of simulation. The interaction and the underlying control strategies can be examined and thus, of course, also advance optimisation.
