Increasing efficiency and optimising processes with hospital simulation
Hospitals today are facing major challenges: rising patient numbers, limited resources and the pressure to ensure a high quality of care at the same time. An innovative solution that meets these challenges is simulation technology.
Hospital simulation allows complex processes and material flows to be realistically reproduced without affecting ongoing operations. This makes it possible to run through various scenarios, such as optimising patient flows or planning new buildings and conversions.
One specific example is the new-build project for the Lörrach Central Clinic, in which we were involved as a simulation partner to ANDREE CONSULT. This project, which will be completed in 2025, includes a health campus that combines inpatient, day-care and outpatient services under one roof. The simulation concentrated on the room capacities for the emergency and elective outpatient clinics. Through the precise modelling of the patient processes, it was possible to demonstrate that the planned capacities are not only sufficient, but also allow for future increases in service volumes.
Typical areas of application for simulations in the healthcare sector:
- Analysis of patient pathways and optimisation of processes
- Review of spatial and logistical concepts
- Simulation of emergency scenarios
- Determination of personnel and resource requirements
Particularly in critical areas such as operating theatres or intensive care units, simulations can reveal planning errors at an early stage, thus leading to sustainable cost savings. Organisational changes can also be tested in advance to minimise potential risks
Simulation provides clear answers to questions such as:
- Why are the queues in the outpatient clinic getting longer instead of shorter?
- Which teams or groups of people are particularly affected by overwork?
- How severely would routine operations be affected by an unexpected emergency?
With well-founded, data-based insights, simulation makes it possible to think through such scenarios in advance. This enables informed decisions to be made and
